This time of year can be problematic for any type of roof, with damage caused specifically by leaves. But how can leaves cause roofing problems, and how can this be addressed?
How can leaves cause roofing problems?
Leaves can cause a number of different problems for your roof, especially at this time of the year. These problems can include:
- Blocked gutters- the number one issue that leaves cause is blocked gutters. Leaves that fall of the trees when wet, at this time of year tend to stick wherever they fall. And once there, others can become stuck on top, creating a layer of sludge and oil that cloggs up your gutter. This makes it more difficult for the gutter to transport water away from the roof safely, and on flat roofs especially, this can lead to problems with standing water. Standing water that is not being drained away can put undue weight and pressure on your roof, which can cause leaks.
- Rot- not only can gutters be clogged, but collections of damp and wet leaves by roof seams and flashing can cause rot, which in turn can also lead to leaks, if the roof protection wears through because of the increased damp conditions and weight of the water.
Rood maintenance
At this time of year, maintaining your roof is more important than ever. This includes removing dead leaves and cleaning the gutters, to help keep your roof in the best possible condition.
