Metal roof winter maintenance

The winter weather brings a variety of dangerous conditions that can have a negative impact on all roofing types, including green roofs, flat roofs and metal roofs. So how can you keep your metal roof in good condition this winter? And what are the important steps for metal roof winter maintenance?

What are the important steps for metal roof winter maintenance?

To keep your metal roof in top condition this winter there are a number of things you should consider. These include:

  • Gutters- gutters can get clogged up with all manner of dirt and debris over the year, and autumn leaves can be the biggest culprit. Early winter you should consider cleaning out all your gutters and preventing balls of clogged leaves from blocking your guttering and pipes. This will allow water to be directed away from the metal roof more successfully, keeping this protected over the winter, when wetter conditions are to be expected.
  • Debris- debris on the roof itself will also need moving early in the winter in preparation for high winds, high rainfall and even snow. Debris like branches and leaves, as well as litter and plant debris can gather on any metal roof, leaving this more vulnerable to the winter weather. For example, in heavy snow this debris can contribute towards weaker spots on the top of your roof, increasing the changes of damage.
  • Insulation and venting- in addition you should also consider the insulation and ventilation for your metal roof. Good insulation will help keep the building warmer and be more energy efficient, while good ventilation will prevent humidity and condensation building up and causing structural problems or damage.
